Whaling

Updated: Jan 1

When the waters of the ocean are really calm, and you are asleep all snuggled in your bed, there is tragedy in the cold and icy Arctic Ocean, where whale hunters lurk in search of whales. Whaling started in the 1730s as commercial whaling, but before that, whales were used for food in the Arctic for survival. Let's talk a little bit about whales, whales are the largest mammals on earth.

They can live over 100 years and can weigh over 100,000 kg. And guess what! Whales evolved from land mammals! Their ancestors were ungulate and adapted to foraging in marine water. In fact, the closest living relative of whales is the hippopotamus! did you know that whales can reduce global warming? The more whales there are, the healthier the oceans will be and the less carbon dioxide there will be in the atmosphere. But I have bad news…an estimated 16,000 whales are being killed each year. This is one reason global warming is happening. Fewer whales mean more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which means it gets warmer. You also don’t want to eat whale meat because whale meat is toxic. It has mercury, PBOP, and heavy metals.

Mercury is bad because if you inhale it, it can cause permanent lung damage and potential brain damage. So how can we help stop whaling? Here are three easy steps to stop whaling.

1)Expose the suffering of whaling on social media and show your friends and family this article.

2) Teach your children about whaling and the problems whales are experiencing.

3)Promote whale watching instead of whale hunting.

There are a lot of things you can do! Just step up and show the world you care!

We hope you can make a difference.
